Traffic Sources for Business Website

Purely having a website doesn’t mean that you are going to get clients with traffic . It’s not a matter of having a website built and you’ll be flooded with leads and paying clients.

You will need to drive traffic to your website to be able to obtain leads and convert them into paying clients.

When it comes to traffic, there are virtually unlimited ways of obtaining it. What is very important is that you track each traffic source so that you know how it converts and what each lead from that traffic source is worth to you after it goes through your funnel.

The reason for this is that different traffic sources (and different campaigns that you run to drive traffic) respond differently to your funnel and produce different results.

You want to strive to have as much data as possible at all times so that you can put your efforts and resources into scaling the most profitable traffic sources and cutting out the traffic sources that are least profitable.

With that being said, let’s look at various traffic sources and strategies that you can use to drive leads to your website.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO

If you choose to integrate a blog or website as part of your funnel and marketing strategy, optimizing your site to rank for keywords that will drive free targeted traffic from search engines could be profitable.

However, unless you are very good at SEO, we’d recommend not making this your main source of traffic. We’d suggest that you initially use other sources to drive traffic instantly so you can get more data from your funnel and know whether or not it’s worth investing in SEO (which takes time and money).

If you focus on SEO as your main source of traffic and you spent money and months of your time waiting for rankings and then get no results, you will be very disappointed.

Once your funnel is profitable and you are looking for additional ways of driving more leads to that funnel, SEO is a good option to consider.

  • Pros: Unlimited free traffic as long as you have rankings
  • Cons: Takes long to obtain rankings (3-6 months), costs money and resources to obtain said rankings and is totally at the mercy of Google (a single update can tank your rankings).

2. Paid Traffic

pay per click

Paid traffic (often referred to as pay per click) is any form of advertising for which you pay to have your ads displayed or clicked on.

There are literally thousands of websites and platforms on which you can pay to advertise and paid traffic is the most instant form of driving leads. You can be driving leads to your funnel within seconds or minutes of your campaign going live, which means that you can start collecting data instantly on how well your pages or funnel converts.

Data is incredibly important because it allows you to see what is profitable and what is not. It allows you to make changes and split tests so that you can find the highest converting pages, processes and setups within your funnel.

Data also allows you to see when your campaign is not profitable and you should stop putting money and resources into that campaign.

While paid traffic can seem very scary if you have little experience with it (due to the possibility of spending a lot of money and getting no return), keep in mind that you do not need a huge budget to be able to start advertising. You can literally get started with $5 per day and if you set your budget, you will not get billed for more than your budget.

  • Pros: Instant traffic, highly targeted, works with any budget
  • Cons: Can be technical to execute (tracking, ad setups etc.)

3. Facebook

Facebook is one of the largest advertising platforms on the internet today. In 2022 there are over 2.93 billion Facebook accounts.

While not every one of these accounts belongs to a unique person (there are plenty of fake and duplicate accounts), Facebook still has a database of hundreds of millions of real users all around the world.

Facebook has a huge amount of data from each user (gender, age, location, interests, education, relationship status etc.) and this allows advertisers to very accurately target specific audiences that are most suited for their campaigns.

For example, a company selling baby diapers can very easily target females between ages 24 and 35, living in a specific location, who have shown interest in “parenting”, “potty-training”,”I became a mom” and thus be able to run very effective ad campaigns to an audience that is virtually their perfect target market.

Facebook advertising is very easy to get started with. Their user interface is very easy to understand and they have a wide variety of advertising options (page likes, video views, website clicks, website conversions) that help you create a campaign best suited for your objectives.

There is also no high-cost entry barrier to become a Facebook advertiser. You can literally create a campaign and get started for $5 per day.

Facebook is very easy to get started with and still has huge potential due to the sheer amount of users who are on it. It is not as easy and profitable as it used to be a few years ago (due to mass advertisers and spammers forcing Facebook to become a lot stricter and have more rules), but it’s difficult not to make a profit with Facebook if you dedicate yourself to learning how to advertise on it properly.

  • Pros: Easy to learn, huge reach, very good targeting options, very cheap video views.
  • Cons: Not as effective as a few years ago, strict advertising guidelines.

4. Google Adwords

Google Adwords

Google adwords is another advertising platform giant. Due to their domination with the Google search engine, Adwords offers an incredibly large reach with many targeting options.

The difference between Facebook and Adwords in terms of targeting is huge. With Facebook, you can target users by specific characteristics like age, gender, interests etc.

However, you cannot target users by a criteria of what they are looking for at that very moment. For example if a Facebook user is looking to buy a guitar, there is no way of being able to target that and display ads to them.

With Adwords, you have no ability to target users by criteria like age, gender, interests etc., but you can target users who are looking for very specific things.

For example, you can choose to display your guitar store ads only to people who are searching for keywords like “buy guitar online”.

While there are definitely some criteria that you can enter in your campaigns with Adwords, (like geographic location and the type of device they are using to perform Google searches with) there are not too many.

It is definitely possible to still make a lot of money with Adwords but just like with Facebook, Adwords has become a lot less profitable in the recent years. There is a lot of competition, and due to the fact that ads work on an auction system, the price you pay to receive a click can run up to tens of dollars (and more) per click for competitive keywords.

Combine this with the strict advertising guidelines in Google has in place, and it makes Adwords not a newbie-friendly ad platform to start with.

However, there is still a lot of money to be made with Adwords so it’s definitely worth looking into as a traffic source once your funnel is up and running and you need more leads.

  • Pros: Buyer-specific targeting, huge reach
  • Cons: Expensive, strict advertising guidelines

5. Twitter

In a sense, Twitter is very similar to a search engine where your ads can show up with people you wish to target. This means you can target by keyword and can target very specific audiences relevant to your objectives.

Twitter allows you to build up “custom” audiences based on target keywords, and you can then market to these audiences that you built up.

There are also various targeting options for your ad campaigns: you can target by keywords or target by interests and gender or target by geography or by device or by analysing your existing followers.

In general, Twitter ads tend to be relatively cheap (compared to a platform like Adwords). Twitter is reported to have over 500 million users so there is potential for huge reach with your advertising campaigns.

Due to the sheer size of users you can reach with Twitter, it is not a platform that you should ignore.

  • Pros: Easy to use, relatively cheap, can build your own custom audience to market to.
  • Cons: Bad tracking, limited campaign parameters

6. YouTube

YouTube

More than 1 billion users visit Youtube every single month. Billions of hours of video are watched every single month. Improvements in technology ensure that these numbers will only increase.

The more accessible smartphones and computers become and the faster and cheaper internet and data becomes, the more popular video becomes.

Pricing is still very reasonable with the ability of still getting in the very low $0.xx range and even the $0.0x range for cost per view. There are many targeting options.

For example , you are able to choose specific partners to display your ads alongside, or alternatively you can hand-pick specific videos where you want your ads displayed.

You can target customers based on their gender, geographic location, the language they speak or interests. You are able to pay per view and not per impression.

The analytics are called Insights and tracks a whole range of data like views, popularity, demographics, audience attention etc. Another nice feature is that you can target people who previously visited your site or your video via Remarketing campaigns.

Youtube is the second most popular search engine in the world after Google and video is one of the most effective advertising mediums. This is a traffic source that should not be ignored.

  • Pros: Newbie-friendly, huge reach, great targeting options, relatively cheap.
  • Cons: Very few

7. Reddit

Reddit is a huge online forum with more than 5 billion monthly page views. It is divided into smaller “forums”, called subreddits, where people with shared interests can post questions, vote on topics, submit cool pictures, etc. and comment on every post.

When advertising, you can choose from either a link campaign or a text campaign. Link ads are like regular PPC ads when someone clicks they get sent to your website. Text campaigns look very similar to regular posts on Reddit and allow a link within the body of the text.

The good part is that there is a huge, passionate community and Reddit is very organized in terms of interests and categories. This makes targeting relatively easy.

You can get started for as little as $5 and the ad platform is really simple to start using. There is little that you have to lose and there is potentially a lot to gain.

  • Pros: Newbie friendly, don’t need a huge budget, inexpensive compared to big platforms
  • Cons: Not always easy to get an ROI

8. Pinterst

Pinterest is a social image sharing site. Users can create accounts and share or “pin” their favorite images, which can be reshared or liked by other users.

It’s estimated to have over 433 million users of which more than half are female. for the Pinterest. We suggest keeping a close eye on this because Pinterest becomes one of the most CTA% higher platform to everyone,

9. Media Buys

Media buys are the purchase of advertising directly from an agency or media company. There are countless companies and individuals who own web properties (blogs, websites) or other assets (email lists) where you can display your ads for a price.

For example if you wanted to advertise to medical professionals, you could find a media company who owns a network of medical sites and blogs, and buy ad space on their web properties.

media buy example

Google is your friend, and the easiest way to find websites that allow media buys is to do some searching.

  • Pros: Very targeted reach and possibility of huge ROI
  • Cons: Expensive, not newbie friendly

10. Video Traffic

Video is an extremely powerful tool to connect with your audience, gain exposure and drive traffic. The two biggest platforms for video are Youtube and Facebook.

Youtube Video

Youtube is incredibly powerful because it can drive enormous traffic, with our without paid promotion. There are literally hundreds of people who have become millionaires due to the views their videos got on Youtube.

If at all possible in the niche that you enter, it’s highly advised to create a Youtube channel where you start building a subscriber base and posting informative videos on a regular basis.

The more videos you post (and of course the more you promote those videos and grow your subscriber base), the higher the chance is that your videos will go viral and send hundreds of thousands of people to your websites and email lists.

Facebook Video

Facebook is traditionally thought of as a social media platform and not as a video sharing platform. However, lately video has become increasingly popular on Facebook.

Video is a fantastic way of communicating a message and bonding with your target audience. Just as on Youtube, video has potential to drive huge amounts of traffic to your website, fan page or email lists, with or without promotion.

At the time of writing this module, paid Facebook video promotion is dirt cheap. You can get tens of thousands of video views for literally a penny per view.

11. Solo Ads

Solo ads are purchased email blasts from people who own email lists in your niche. The solo ad industry is huge and there are people who build up email lists of tens of thousands of subscribers purely to sell email blasts to others.

The good thing about solo ads is that you buy a guaranteed amount of clicks (clicks on the link in the email that was sent out on your behalf).

So, for example you may spend $200 in return for a guaranteed 500 clicks. If the traffic of the vendor is of high quality and in the exact niche you are in, and if your email ad copy and your landing page are proven to convert well, you can get conversions rates of up to 70% from solo ads.

If your funnel has shown to convert well and you have monetized it correctly, you could use solo ads to add huge numbers of subscribers to your email lists without it costing you anything (because your funnel makes back the money you spent on the solo ad).

The downside is that not all traffic from solo ads are good quality. Some of it converts very poorly. You also have to be careful which vendors you buy from because there are regular cases of scams in the industry where someone promises to mail for you and just runs off with your money.

Do your research before you buy solo ads from anyone. The easiest way to find solo ads is to just go to Google and type in “industry” + solo ads.

You should be able to find solo ad vendors in all the major niches very easily (online marketing, health, wealth and romance), but smaller niches also tend to have people prepared to sell solo ads.

Alternatively you could approach email list owners in your industry and offer to pay them to send out an email to their list promoting your product, service or offer.

  • Pros: Newbie friendly, don’t need a huge budget, inexpensive compared to big platforms
  • Cons: Often poor quality traffic

12. Guest Posting / Content Marketing

Guest posting as a strategy for driving traffic has been around for years and while it has received harsh criticism for lack of effectiveness (especially in terms of SEO), when done correctly, guest posting is still a very good way to drive traffic.

The key is to provide really valuable content and get that content in front of a lot of eyeballs (i.e. get it published on high traffic blogs and websites). Guest posts have ability to drive traffic for many months and years after they are published, so there is definitely a long term advantage over this form of traffic generation.

You do not necessarily need to create content for guest posts yourself. If you are not a fan of writing or creating content, you can outsource it.

Just be sure to pay enough so you can get very high quality guest posts. Stay away from generic content, you want to create content that really stands out and impresses people enough they want to share it with all their friends.

This may mean you need to pay upwards of $50 for a quality guest post, but if that guest post ends up driving hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your own pages, that money is definitely worth every penny.
