How to Write a Twitter Thread

Threads are one of the best way to write engaging tweets on Twitter. They give you a unique opportunity to open up to your audience that 280 characters do not allow.

You can share ideas and personal stories to connect with the reader. Because of this, we have found that they are the easiest way to gain followers and help you stand out from the crowd. Just make sure they are executed well.

Threads get the most traction when you already have a small audience. Begin to publish threads when you have over 1000 follows. If you are under 100 follows, stick with lists and use the lists as a way to gauge what your audience is interested in.

You can later turn lists into threads. Think of lists as mini-threads whose ideas have not been fleshed out.

There are two categories of threads: List Threads and Personal Stories.

In this section, we will cover what they are, how to write them, and how to maximize exposure. Getting exposure is key. Whenever you write a thread you want as many eyeballs on it as possible.

The more eyeballs mean more follows. The more follows mean more fans. This section will serve as a step-by-step guide to write and get the most eyes on your threads.

Writing threads is a science !!

1. List Threads

List threads are easier to write because they have a structure. While they are formulaic in nature, they keep readers engaged.

When you title a post that has a great hook for the reader and makes an emotional connection the reader will want to read the entire post. Basic copywriting techniques implemented at the beginning of a thread writing result in massive engagement and impressions.

  • Opener

The first tweet is the most important part of a thread. You win and lose here. If the title is unappealing you will lose people from the start.  An audience will read a thread if they understand what is about while they are intrigued.

Choose a title and a topic that is clear. When writing a List Thread use words like tips, habits, ideas, and mental models. Buzz words are an excellent framework. The title should have the number of points followed by the idea you wish to promote.

The sub-text follows the title. You can get creative but do not give too much away. If you give too much away they won’t read the rest of the post.

Entice the reader with persuasive language. aim for an almost incomplete thought. The last line should have the word Thread. You can dress it with // or =

Also, consider using a picture. Pictures pair well with threads.

  • Body

The ideal thread should be around 15 to 20 slides. A list thread that has around 20 ideas should be one idea per slide. Add a second post sparingly if you need more space to explain.

Just be prudent. You can go over 30 slides but your audience might begin to tune you out if you go over.

The KEY to list threads is to make EACH point highly retweetable. This can set off a chain reaction that can lead to virality. In the body of the thread, you can make lists or use repetition to drive home your points.

Think of a thread like a giant lego set. Plug and play different ideas.

In the end, you can add a CTA. Ask politely for a retweet. Or add a link to a product you are selling or a service you provide.

Threads that go viral get lots of click-throughs. Take advantage of it.

2. Story Threads

Story Threads are written less for engagement purposes but they result in the most follows and truest fans.

The key is to share experiences and what you learned. Do not talk to audiences, talk with them. The tone is important. Type like you are speaking to a trusted friend.

What can you write about? Here are some ideas:

  • What was the motivation for your account?
  • Did you overcome a personal tragedy?
  • How did you achieve an important life goal?
  • What are your values? Why?
  • Did you go on an adventure? Share it.
  • Who had a positive impact on your life?

If you haven’t achieved anything in life that is worthwhile, maybe you should focus more on the fundamentals of life before you become a guru.

Regardless, I am sure there is a story from your past that is interesting. Reflect and share it with the world.

When storytelling, do not hold back. No topic is out-of-bounds. Your words can inspire others to take action. You will be surprised at how you can impact lives. You can make the world a better place while making your account powerful. Win-win.

1. Brainstorm

Whenever you get an idea for a thread – WRITE IT DOWN , take your time with threads. Always have them brewing.

If you are struggling with ideas, look at what posts are performing well on your timeline. Your audience is telling you what they want. Draw inspiration from what works. Elaborate.

2. Write Thread

write story threads using google documents so you can first braindump the story. To braindump a story thread simply use the voice-to-text option and speak into a microphone.

Story threads feel the most organic when you brain dump and then edit HEAVILY. Break the story into chunks.

You want everyone to see it when they come to your page. It will continually add followers.

5. Reflect
