What is Profitable Niche
A “profitable niche” is a topic containing a group of keywords that has low competition within SERPs from other pages.
That means the search results for the topic are composed of low authority sites and thin content, both factors of which make up a topic that’s easy to rank for in organic search.
These niches that can generate hundreds or even thousands of visits per page per month in a short period.
To do this, you need to Find Profitable niche to target for your site.
You’ll need a keyword research tool to find information about the topics you might be interested in. As always , Ahrefs provides you with the best set of SEO tools you’ll need to create a site that will rank on Google.
How to Find a Niche
If you have no idea where to start searching for your niche, Ahrefs has got you covered. From its Keyword Explorer feature, you can leave the text box empty before setting the search button.
From here, you’ll be presented with a host of keywords that you can parse down and filter according to your specifications.
When filtering keywords, you can focus on narrowing down the results by KD and including certain words in the search term.
For now, you just want to limit the KD to 20 max to show you a host of easy-to-target keywords.
Browse through the search terms and see if there’s a topic that piques your interests. If none of the initial terms do it for you, this is where the Include drop-down menu comes into play.
Click on it to enter the words and terms you want to show on the results. When thinking of words to enter, consider your hobbies, interests, and skills.
For example, if you enjoy baseball, enter the term here, and refresh the search.
From the results, you should be able to find a few ideas that you can expand later in your search.
If none of the results spark anything in you, replace the word with another one of your hobbies or interests.
Again, the great thing about this method is you scrape Ahrefs’ database of keywords and narrow them down according to ease of ranking on organic search and interest.
Another way to find profitable niches is to look at what big sites are doing.
Mind you, we’re not going to copy these sites. Going up against authoritative and popular websites will take years and decades before you could even have a chance to beat them on SERPs.
Instead, find large sites that have a plethora of niches on the site but also don’t specifically target niches.
Example of these sites are as follows:
- Thewirecutter.com
- G2.com
- Consumerreports.org
- Thespruce.com
- Bestproducts.com
- Digitaltrends.com (And their various subdomains)
- Businessinsider.com
- Forbes.com
- Buzzfeed.com
- Gearhungry.com
- Tomsguide.com
- Reddit.com
- Cnet.com
- PCGamer.com
- Gearpatrol.com
- Reviewed.com
- Reviews.com
- Quora.com
- Gearbest.com
- T3.com
- Trustedreviews.com
- Creativebloq.com
- Popularmechanics.com
- Money.com
- Consumersadvocate.org
- Goodhousekeeping.com
- Timeout.com
- Lonelyplanet.com
- Techradar.com
- Pcmag.com
- Wired.co.uk
- Hubspot.com
- Androidcentral.com
- Gearjunkie.com
It’s best to find sites from above with topics that you have a passion for. If you’re into mobile devices, for instance, then check out Androidcentral.com.
Run the domain using Ahrefs’ Site Explorer and look for keywords the site is ranking for. Then filter the keywords to show you those with a KD below 20.
You can lower the max KD to show on your page to help you narrow down your search and show you easier topics to target.
You can also type in words and terms you want to be included in the results.
Once you found your keyword using either method, you need to look for the SERP overview of the keyword.
Click on it to go to the keyword’s overview and scroll down until you see the SERP overview section.
Here’s what it looks for the keyword “galaxy watch vs active 2:”
I boxed the DR column which refers to Domain Rating. It’s a site metric used by Ahrefs to determine the quality of the site according to its link profile.
The higher the score (on a scale of 0-100), the more authoritative the site is.
In this case, even though “galaxy watch vs active 2” has a KD of 13 as of writing, the ranking pages for the term are from sites with very competitive domains.
In this case, it’s best to find another keyword with low-DR sites.
This process goes to show that you should never blindly rely on KD when choosing keywords. At best, it’s a very loose metric to base your analysis on. Only when used together with other metrics and data does it become truly helpful.
If you check the SERP overview for “Samsung gear s3 frontier vs galaxy watch” (KD 0), you will see two outlier sites that you can try and outrank.
Ideally, you want at least half of the results to have a DR below 30. In this case, keep searching for other keywords that will produce your desired metrics. Now, I’ve featured two keywords related to Samsung products.
I could use this as a lead off to research this topic. Enter “Samsung” on Keyword Explorer, scroll down the page to see keyword ideas related to your search.
“Samsung” has a KD of 91. It’s okay if the topic has a high KD – what we’re more concerned about is the KD of its related searches and the feasibility of ranking for those instead.
View all keywords using Having same terms to narrow down the keywords you want to optimize for.
Just by using the KD filter, there are over 166,000 keywords to choose from. As always, you can further narrow down your list using the filters above.
This process above should help you break down a topic into its subtopics and see if you can easily rank for them based on the information provided by Ahrefs. Again, if you want to engage in a high-competition and high-authority niche because you’re passionate about it, you must create over a thousand pages of unique content to become a topical authority and compete on the scale of those already dominating.
That’s why You should go for these types of lower volume gold mine niches. But with my systems in place and resources I can now build out 4 or 5 sites per month, whilst JV’ing (Joint Venture) on another handful in between.
Our strategies are much more niche-focused, creating highly concentrated topical authority around our sets of keywords so we can try and rank #1 across the board within time.
This allows you to make things a lot more cost-efficient than most of the competitors you’ll be ranking against.
